Genotype the right thing for better HCV treatment

Hepatitis C is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the liver. For some people, hepatitis C is a short-term illness, but for 70%–85% of people who become infected with Hepatitis C, it becomes a long-term, chronic infection. Chronic Hepatitis C is a serious disease than can result in long-term health problems, even death.

There’re commonly 6 HCV variants (1-6) and genotyping those variants will help determine the correct treatment. Simeprevir is an oral hepatitis C virus protease inhibitor approved for treatment of chronic HCV infection. It’s highly effective for HCV genotype 1. However, patients with HCV 1a Q80K have a significantly low Sustained Virologic Response (SVR).
